Ways to Practice Self Care

Self care and wellness is something I really want to make a priority for the remainder of this year. I think we as a society associate self care as being indulgent, but truly it’s necessary in order to survive. Self care is certainly something that I typically don’t make time for when things are busy, but I notice such a difference when I do. I’m someone who can be quite hard on myself and I often take on more than I can handle because I want to help as many people as I can. This results in me feeling bad about myself and burnt out a lot of the time to be completely honest. I’ve recently realized that I need to take a step back sometimes to take care of yourself before you can help others.

So, I want to try and take out even just a small portion of everyday to do something for myself and my wellbeing. Just something small, but I want to be mindful about it. I started making a list of some ways to practice self care and thought I would share them with you too, as I think we can all benefit from a little more self love:

Stay Hydrated

I am terrible when it comes to drinking water, but I feel so much better when I do drink enough. Being hydrated helps me feel more awake and it also helps me digest my food better. Not only that, but I notice a difference in my skin when I’m drinking enough water too.

Do a Face Mask

Face masks are probably my favourite indulgence. They give me 10-20 minutes to relax and destress, plus I’m getting all sorts of skin benefits from them! I’ve recently been testing out some from Yes To* and I have been really impressed! Their Mud Masks and Paper Masks come individually packaged, so you’re using the right amount. Plus, they have so many options so no matter what skin concerns you have, you’ll be able to find one perfect for you! They’re affordable too, so you can treat yourself without breaking the bank!

Ways to Practice Self Care

Exercise

While I do not like to go to the gym whatsoever, I can’t deny what exercise does for my mood. I feel far less stressed if I get moving, plus I feel better about myself for making the effort. I’ve decided that going for walks and doing yoga videos at home are what work best for me. I’m also starting to get into tennis a bit as well which has been fun. While not everyday do I have an hour or more to dedicate to working out, I want to aim for a minimum of 30 minutes.

Take a Bath

For me, there is nothing more relaxing than a bubble bath with some candles. It completely calms me and I always feel at least a little bit better afterwards. I know some people really hate baths, so a hot shower usually does the trick too if you prefer!

Get Enough Sleep

Sleep is one of those things that is easy to put off when things get busy, but it’s so important to get enough rest. When you don’t you’re more likely to make poor eating decisions, be less productive, and are also going to be more irritable. Going to bed earlier and waking up earlier is key for me when it comes to feeling both rested and productive. I’m usually pretty good about this, but I want to be more mindful of the good it does.
