It’s no secret that stress negatively impacts your health. I’m someone who needs to learn how to better manage her stress and it’s something I am trying to improve upon.
I think we are easily able to identify when we’re stressed because of how it makes us feel mentally; but stress can also have a negative impact on our physical appearance too.
I’m someone who is really into taking care of my skin so today I thought it would be fun to share 4 signs your skin is stressed + what to do about it:
1. Your Eyes Look Super Tired
When you don’t get enough sleep, your blood circulation decreases which causes the blood vessels under your eyes to expand. This is what makes your eyes look dark and puffy.
The fix? Getting 7-8 hours of sleep each night is your best bet. If that’s not doable though, a good eye cream the next best thing. I recommend the Dermarché Labs BIOREWIND Total Restorative Eye Cream*. The formula contains caffeine to help to improve the visible appearance of dark circles and puffiness.
The formula also works to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes too. The packaging is really great because it comes in a pump bottle so that the ingredients in the eye cream will stay potent. Eye creams can be pricey, and this one is definitely a splurge, but there really is no denying what they can do for your appearance. Applying a little of this in the morning before you do your makeup is going to going to help reduce puffiness and brighten your under eye area so while you may feel exhausted, you will actually look well rested.
2. Your Skin Looks Dull
When you are stressed your body loses water and it doesn’t shed dead skin cells as quickly as it normally does. This often leads to a dull complexion and even dry, uncomfortable skin.
The fix? There are 3 essential products that will help your skin return to a healthy, glowy state. First up is a good exfoliator. This is going to sluff away dead skin cells to give you a brighter looking complexion. My favourite is the Laura Mercier Flawless Skin Face Polish* as the beads are quite fine and don’t irritate my often-sensitive skin. It also makes my skin feel really soft, which is an added perk.
It is then important to hydrate your skin with a good moisturizer. I really like the LANEIGE Water Bank Moisture Cream* because it offers intense hydration while still being a lightweight texture that doesn’t break me out.
Lastly, a luminous primer will help your skin look its best throughout the day while making your makeup last longer. The Erborian Glow Créme Illuminating Face Cream* is a great option as it gives the skin a glowy, radiant look!
3. You’re Breaking Out More Than Usual
When your body releases the stress hormone cortisol, it also releases some testosterone which spikes oil production. Excess oil is a contributing factor when it comes to breakouts so it is very common to experience more acne than usual when you’re stressed.
The Fix? Make sure you are properly cleansing your face 1-2 times per day. I also like to use an overnight acne treatment like the Kate Somerville EradiKate. This solution contains the highest level of sulfur allowed and works to banish acne. You take a bit on a cotton swab and apply it to any blemishes before bed and then rinse off in the morning. It doesn’t smell the greatest but it works really well to get rid of existing acne and it helps prevent under the surface acne from popping up.
Another great thing to have on hand is concealer. I really like the Tarte Shape Tape concealer as it does a really good job of masking my blemishes without looking cakey.
4. Your Face is Red and/or Irritated
Inflammation is a common side effect of stress and can leave your skin feeling sensitive and irritated.
The Fix? Using a comforting mask 2-3 times per week can help nourish your skin and reduce inflammation. I really like the L’Oreal Pure-Clay Comforting & Unifying Mask* because it immediately soothes my skin and leaves it feeling nourished and soft. It only gets left on for 10 minutes,so it doesn’t take a long time to do. Plus, my skin feels instantly better when I rinse the mask off. It smells lovely and is a great way to pamper irritated skin on a budget.
I have teamed up with L’Oreal to give 3 lucky readers a chance to win a Pure-Clay Comforting & Unifying Mask of their own as well as the 3 new Pure-Clay Cleansers! See giveaway below:
