When autumn rolls around I like to do a little fall cleaning. Similar to spring cleaning, I like to go through and organize my life a little bit. While I still probably do a bigger job in the spring, I still like to take even just one weekend in the fall to clear out. It gives me a fresh start and makes me feel recharged.
Here are some of the things I like to do when I’m doing my fall cleaning:
Do A Closet Clean Out
I like to move all of my autumn and winter clothes to the front of my closet. This makes them easily accessible; and it allows me to take inventory of what I have and what I might still need. I also like to go through my summer clothes and donate anything I didn’t wear. If I didn’t wear a certain piece last season it’s probably safe to say I’m not going to. So, it makes sense to clear out space and make room for things I’ll actually wear.
Give Everything A Deep Clean
Dusting, vacuuming, and wiping down surfaces doesn’t need to take more than a few hours and it’s amazing how good it feels afterward. It makes my home feel refreshed and realistically can be done in just a few hours. These things need to be maintained throughout the season of course; but spending an afternoon doing a really thorough job gets me off on the right foot. My favourite rooms to tackle are my own as well as the bathroom (is that weird?).
When it comes to wiping down surfaces, Pine-Sol has been a staple in my household for as long as I can remember. You can use it to clean so many things, making it a great cleaning product to have on hand. When it comes to the bathroom I love the lavender scent. I love taking baths in the fall and the lavender scent really helps set the tone and makes it easy for me to relax. Everywhere else though, I like using the mandarin orange scent. It smells like Kool-Aid and reminds me of being a kid. It’s funny how scents can transport you. While doing a typically monotonous task, I can be reminded of good times and it instantly puts me in a better mood. Pine-Sol has a few other scents too, so you’re bound to find one you like for your home as well.
For me, a tidy home helps me to be more productive and feel better. So, while most people might hate this part of ‘fall cleaning’ it really is essential and you’ll feel a million times better once it’s done!
Organize your recipes
Lastly, I like to go through my Pinterest boards and recipe book to dig out all of my fall recipes. These include old favourites that I like to make every year as well as new ones I have been wanting to try. Sorting through them helps me from getting stuck in a food rut and encourages me to try new things. I also like to go through the pantry and take inventory of what we have and what we need to pick up. I do a lot more baking this time of year so taking inventory of staples I don’t always use helps me cut down on food waste. This way, I’m not impulsively purchasing brown sugar because I can’t remember whether or not I have any at home.
Do you do any ‘fall cleaning’ this time of year? What does your routine entail?
